THE SKINNY ON LOSING FAT

By BARBARA HOFFMAN

October 30, 2001 -- CALL it "the tough-love diet": Miss a meeting or fail to keep a log of everything you've eaten, and you're kicked out of the club.

Only the most determined will reap the rewards.

So says Roberta Russell of Permanent Weight Loss, the program that helped her lose 60 pounds and keep them off - by eating less and moving more.

Russell, who's written and lectured on psychotherapy, firmly believes you need "allies in the war on fat."

That's why the former 185-pounder started a weight-loss club near her vacation home in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Now she's starting a group in the city - and it's free.

The first meeting is Sunday at 2 p.m. - "sharp!" - at Gracie Square Hospital, 420 E. 76th St., between First and York avenues, in the first-floor auditorium.

Bring a notebook, pen and a sense of steely resolve. For more information, check www.permanentweightloss.org.
